Ian Mooers joined CEDET as the Executive Director in January 2009.  Ian comes to the position with almost 10 years of experience in linking the resources of a university to the needs of communities, businesses, and industry.  Ian recently held the position of Director, Entrepreneurial Programs at George Mason University in Fairfax, VA, where he frequently worked with senior administration to help the university connect with community leaders, business leaders, legislative officials, and state government officials to promote program collaboration related to entrepreneurship, economic development, and applied research activities.  Ian spent several years working in Career Services at George Mason and Georgetown University which built a strong understanding of employers and their hiring trends as it relates to the University community.  Ian has worked in Sales as a Senior Corporate Recruiter identifying candidates for major corporate clients and then developing new client accounts.   Ian was born in Potomac, MD and now resides in Irvine, KY with his wife Katie (a native of Kentucky) and their daughter, Alise.

Ian earned a Bachelor of Arts in Communication and a Master of Education in Educational Administration from Salisbury University in Salisbury, MD.

Gary Marshall

R. Gary Marshall joined CEDET as the Executive Director of the Eastern Region Innovation Commercialization Center (ICC) on August 8, 2005.

Gary is an experienced senior manager with a broad 31-year background combining business and operations expertise in management, marketing, sales, engineering, quality and production. During the course of his career, Gary has held positions as Vice-President of Sales and Marketing, Marketing Manager, Quality, Application and Production Engineer. Industry experience included custom-engineered process, test and specialty equipment for the automotive and appliance industries, heat-transfer systems for the aerospace industry, disposable medical electrodes, fiberglass products for the chemical industry and mechanical power-transmission components. He has also assisted over thirty client companies in a wide variety of industries and applications as a Client Services Manager. His background and experience provide a unique perspective and the ability to grasp the complexity of business and operational challenges in business development.

Gary earned a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Kentucky and an MBA in Marketing from Wright State University.

Kristel Smith

Kristel Smith joined the CEDET staff on October 7, 2003 as Assistant Director of the Eastern Region Innovation and Commercialization Center. Her experience and background include an undergraduate degree in Computer Science, a master’s degree in Business Administration, and an International Economics study at the School of Economics in Austria. Ms. Smith’s work experience includes brand management, project management, IT management and budget analysis, along with teaching experience in the university and community and technical college system. Her experience also includes industry training, leadership development, team building, and workforce empowerment.

Most recently, Ms. Smith has received a fellowship to participate in the Kentucky Entrepreneurial Coaching and Leadership Institute, a year long training program in economic development administered by the University of Kentucky.

John Preston

John Preston joined the EKU SBDC as the Business Coordinator on January 15, 1999. The SBDC became part of CEDET in 2007.  John is based in the SBDC’s Somerset office which serves the Center’s 15-county service area as a general management consultant, working one -on-one with clients and coordinating training workshops.  He has over 28 years’ experience in business, mostly in banking, mortgage and consumer lending and personnel management.  He managed his own insurance agency for five years.
John earned a Bachelor of Science in Accounting from the University of Kentucky.

Brenda Meyring

Brenda Meyring joined the CEDET staff in October 2000 as office manager/administrative assistant for the Jackson County Entrepreneurship Center. Effective July 2005, she began working at the entrepreneur center in Berea as Office Associate. In July 2007, Brenda accepted the position of Administrative Assistant for the Eastern Region Innovation and Commercialization Center. Her experience includes over 30 years of accounting/office management.

Kathy Werking

Kentucky Artisan Heritage Trails

Kathy Werking is currently working under contract with CEDET as the project manager for the Kentucky Artisan Heritage Trails.  She has been involved with the KAHT project since its inception in 1999.

Kathy owns a family business (3 generations of Werking Women), making natural body products and soy wax candles since 1997. Kathy's products are made in small batches, using high quality ingredients.  We use only pure essential oils (no fragrance oils) in any product that touches your skin.

In addition, Kathy paints floor cloths and furniture and makes twisted wire jewelry.  Her retail store is located in Midway, Kentucky.  Kathy is a juried member of the Kentucky Craft Marketing program and the Kentucky Guild of Artists and Craftsmen.  Kathy facilitates wholesaling and business plan workshops for Kentucky’s artists and serves as a mentor for the Kentucky Craft Marketing program.
